The Center for Sustainable Development

The Center for Sustainable Development – CDS is a permanent teaching, research and extension unit of the University of Brasília – UnB, directly linked to the President’s office, through the Dean’s Office of Graduate Studies. It is an academic space whose mission is to promote the ethics of sustainability, by means of dialogue between different fields, by the building of knowledge, and by educational training aimed at the development of pertinent skills.

Strategic Objectives of CDS

    To expand its national and international performance, aiming to achieve academic excellence.

    To strengthen, support and expand knowledge building by professors and students and its dissemination, with an emphasis on interdisciplinarity.

  • 3

    To increase the quality of the student training and the number of students, mainly by giving special attention to the Undergraduate Course in Environmental Sciences (created in 2009).

  • 4

    To strengthen or create spaces for innovation and the construction of sustainability.

  • 5

    To advance and improve its institutionality and its organizational system.

Teaching

The Graduate Program in Sustainable Development of the University of Brasilia was created in December, 1995. The Doctoral Studies Program in Environment and Development admitted its first class in March, 1996. The Master’s Course began in March, 1998.

PPG-CDS currently offers the following degrees

> Ph. D. in Sustainable Development;

> M. Sc. in Sustainable Development;

> Professional Master’s Degree in Sustainability of Indigenous Lands and Traditional Peoples,

CDS also routinely offers a Specialization courses (short-term graduate degree). Between 2001 and 2012, 12 such courses took place, with different emphases and aimed at different students, such as Environmental Education, Environmental Law and Sustainable Development. Over 420 specialist degrees were granted.
